Let's At Least TRY and Get Our Congresscritters to Do Their God Damned JOBS
I should take the time to also thank him for his pointer to the Treaty of Tripoli, a document ratified by the US congress in 1797 (I think... I'm doing this from memory), which was still basically composed of our founding fathers at the time. Why is this important?
Because it contains an item that specifically states the following:
"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen,-and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
The next time some desperate religious despot tries to tell you that the US is a Christian nation, remind them that all treaties ratified by the US congress have the force of law.... and point them here. They'll still be in denial, but at least you'll have bitch slapped them in an honest debate.
